BUS-TRAIN INTERFACE AT NAMPALLY STATION



The Nampally railway station has only fewer long distance trains arriving or departing from it. It also is a terminal for MMTS services. Bringing RTR buses and long distance buses in close proximity to the railway station will be a facility which will be deeply appreciated by all long distance train and MMTS commuters.

The figure above shows 15 bus stops to be provided for the 15 RTR bus routes. RTR buses and long distance buses which move either clockwise [red] or anticlockwise [blue] upon the IRR are brought near to the station. To enable the IRR-anticlockwise moving buses to smoothly reach the bus stops of this interface, it is essential to regulate the traffic around the Nampally station as shown in the figure above.

Parking for cars, taxis and autos and their movements at the station are also given. These vehicles cannot enter into the portico of the station building but departing passengers have to alight from their vehicles at the site G in the figure and move towards the station through the gaps provided in the lane divider.

The city bus can well be entrusted with the job of transporting rail related mails and parcels.

This place can also be developed as a transfer station for domestic and international mails and parcels.

BUS-TRAIN INTERFACE AT SECUNDERABAD RAILWAY STATION


This figure could not be included in the TROFF document. The Secunderabad Railway Station is a very important place for the APSRTC: it is its birthplace. The first city bus service started out from this station as a feeder service in 1932 during the Nizam's reign. 77 years have gone by and the APSRTC still continues to cling to its birthplace: nearly three-fourths or more of its entire fleet of city buses have this place as a terminal or pass through this area. Suburban buses also have their terminal here and farmers from surrounding villages bring in their produce to the nearby Monda Market. Suburban trains also bring in farmers and their produce to the vegetable market every day.

Though the city boasts of three long distance passenger train railway stations [Secunderabad, Nampally and Kacheguda], the most important one is the Secunderabad station. Nearly 100 or more trains from all over the country arrive or depart from this station every day. The arrival and departure of each train is associated with an increased traffic in the roads surrounding the station.

Because of its being central to the operations of long distance trains, city buses and suburban buses, Secunderabad is the most busiest place in the city. Troff does not in any way interfere with the present day movement of pasengers [train or bus] at this place but it rather adds to their comfort levels.

In the figure above are given details of the bus-train interface to be provided at the Boyiguda side of the Secunderabad railway station. All the RTR buses, both red [clockwise] and blue [anticlockwise] as well as the long distance buses [here again both red and blue] are brought close to the Secunderabad railway station. such an interface will result in unimaginable levels of comfort to long distance train commuters arriving or departing from the city, to long distance bus commuters and to intra-city commuters.

Complaints are posted in the newspapers in which train commuters whose trains have arrived in the late night hours or early hours of the morning had to face no small amount of harassment by autorikshaw drivers who demanded exorbitant fares from them.

Troff's bus services being available 24 hours a day will make life easier for all classes of commuters.

Allowing city buses to transport mails and parcels related to trains would greatly help the cause of public bus transportation.

Collage of LPC, PSWMS and road atop the solid waste wall



Segregation of solid waste into its two basic components...wet waste and dry waste has to be SOLELY done by the waste producer [domestic, commercial or industrial] at his/her place of waste-production. If the waste producer has no time or no inclination to segregate the garbage, he should pay his 'waste collector' an extra fee per month for doing this work.

It is the duty of every 'wet-waste' producer to ensure that the wet waste is SPEEDILY taken to the LPC; from there it is transported by feeder/RTR buses in green colored containers to the PSWMS for vermi-composting under tree shade.

SORTING of the dry waste has to be done by the waste collector [ragpicker] at his residence or some other place of his choice. Sorting is not allowed to be done in public places [roads].

Dry waste is removed from the waste-producer by the waste collector after paying for the commercial component of the waste. By commercial component is meant that part of dry waste which has a resale value and would be used for reusing or recycling purposes. Dry waste need not be cleared every day but upon the convenience of the waste collector. However, should the waste collector desire to have his dry waste removed urgently from his premises, he should call up his waste collector and request him to do so. One should add his waste collector's mobile number to his store of service-renders [family doctor, electrician, plumber, pizza-delivering joint etc.].
After collecting all his dry waste, the waste collector sorts out the commercial waste [CW] at his residence and takes it along with the non commercial waste to the LPC. There he sells the commercial waste but deposits the non commercial waste [NCW].

The end users of CW are identified and they or their agents are to come and take away their stock from the LPC after paying for the same. The vehicles used by them are depicted as "other vehicles' in the figure 1 of the LPC above. Such an arrangement enables one to pay a higher amount of money to the waste collectors who have to make their livelihood in this trade cum service.
NCW is either hazardous or non hazardous. Non hazardous dry waste is placed in blue containers and the hazardous dry waste is placed into brown containers. Both these containers are picked up from the LPC by the feeder buses and taken to the transfer station for the feeder area where RTR buses take and deposit these containers at the solid waste wall beyond the ORR. These wastes are then used as filling material in the construction of the solid waste wall.
The CLASSROOM of the LPC has a very important part to play: it is the meeting point for the rich and the poor, the high and the low, the educated and uneducated sections of public dwelling in that particular feeder area. Civic problems are discussed, solutions sought for, and are wisely dealt with. Emphasis is placed that all the people in that feeder area are educated with the three R's of solid waste management viz. REDUCTION, REUSE AND RECYCLING. Efforts are made to target manufacturers and industries and see that they also ensure that their products do not adversely affect the environment. Once a start is mode in this direction, the momentum will pick up and be self-sustaining. Starting a fire with unprepared wood is always tough, but once the fire picks up, one need not struggle too much to keep the fire going.

LPC: local processing center



This figure shows the requirements of a LPC i.e. local procesing center. Each feeder area needs to be provided with one or more of such centers. Unless these centers are set up, the city of Hyderabad will perpetually remain dirty...garbage getting thrown down upon the road for sorting by ragpickers. The present transport system is able to remove the garbage bins only once a day and until such a time the entire place reeks of foul smelling and rotting garbage.

The LPC will be the place where positive and useful interactions can develop betwen various members of public residing in any feeder area. The main focus of the discussions/classes in the classroom provided at the LPC is related to solid waste management. Healthy responses should ensue and the public stimulated to great a greater and active role in making the city cleaner.

Cleanliness contests could be conducted between the different feeder areas in the city once every month. This should result in awareness of the public regarding their responsibilities in keeping the city clean.

PSWMS :peripheral solid waste management site, garden/orchard



This photo is that of a garden in Gunipudi, a small village near Tuni. Wet waste, the most precious component of solid waste, is to be vermi-composted beneath the shade of trees. The PSWMS at the IBT is developed as an orchard of fruit bearing trees e.g. bananas, mangoes etc. Visitors coming to this site can freely eat of the fruit of this garden. Banana leaves can be used as plates at hotels and the used leaves can be fed to cattle.

details of 8-lane road upon the solid waste wall

This figure [read page 30 of TROFF] shows the manner of usage of the 8-lane road to be laid atop the solid waste wall. The wall is totally for pedestrians only. Separate lanes are provided for walkers, joggers, runners and skaters.

The wall is built up to a height of a 3-storey building.

The wall is provided with a parapet wall with necessary precautions being taken to see that people do not fall down from that height and die.

The road is properly sloped to ensure that rain water does not stagnate but flows through channels at the sides and finally downwards where it is directed into water harvesting pits plentifully provided on either side of the wall in the green belts.

Transportation of goods and solid waste in city bus



In an earlier figure I have shown how commuters are to stand in the bus during peak hours. In this figure I have indicated the sites at which the containers meant for transportation of goods and solid wastes are to be placed in the bus during non peak hours. Goods containers are placed in the gents section adjacent to the barricade. They are firmly fixed to the barricade by a suitable mechanism so that the containers do not move when the bus is in motion. Locking the containers and chaining them to the barricade may be resorted to for safety purposes to prevent thefts. The first six white colored containers have airport related mail and parcels. the next five blue containers contain mail and parcels related to the Nampally railway station. The last red colored containers have mail and parcels of Secunderabad railway station.

In the ladies section, the first four brown colored containers contain dry solid waste which is hazardous; the next four blue colored containers contain dry solid waste which is non hazardous. Both of these types of containers are deposited at the solid waste wall by the RTR bus inexchange for empty ones brought in by earlier buses. The next four green colored containers contain wet solid waste and are unloaded at the PSWMS i.e. peripheral solid waste management site at the IBT for vermi-composting under tree shade. The last four yellow colored containers contain bio-medical waste meant for incineration ; these containers are unloaded at the public cemetery for incineration.

Both gents and ladies traveling in the city bus are to lend a helping hand in loading and unloading of these containers. It will give them good exercise, quicken up unloading and loading times and allow the commuters to do their role in promoting bus services and keeping the city free from solid wastes.
